Melasma is a common skin condition characterized by dark, irregular patches on the face, typically affecting the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. Often referred to as "pregnancy mask" due to its prevalence in pregnant women, melasma can also occur in individuals using hormonal contraceptives or undergoing hormone therapy. It results from an overproduction of melanin, usually triggered by sun exposure, hormonal changes, or genetic predisposition. While melasma itself is not harmful, it can cause cosmetic concerns and affect self-esteem.
Our approach to melasma management utilizes a specialized Q-switched laser that works by emitting high-energy pulses of light in very short bursts, targeting the melanin pigment in the skin without damaging surrounding tissue. This focused approach helps to break up and fragment the pigment, allowing the body’s natural clean up system to gradually remove it.
The treatment involves minimal discomfort and downtime. Typically, a series of sessions is required to achieve optimal results, as melasma can be persistent and may involve deep pigment deposits. To maximize the effectiveness of the Q-switched laser and prevent recurrence, Dr. Hatfield will recommend a comprehensive skincare routine, including regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect against UV exposure.
